The city sits on hot springs, and has done since the Turks arrived.
Széchenyi is the yellow palace with chess players steaming outside in February. Gellért is the art-nouveau one with the stained glass. Rudas still has the octagonal Ottoman pool under a dome. Book the ticket, take a towel, stay four hours.

The funicular up, Fisherman’s Bastion looking back over the water, the biggest parliament building in Europe on the flat Pest bank, and the streets behind Dohány utca where the city keeps its hardest history. These three carry more travellers than anything else on land.

The white turrets are free to walk; the upper terrace charges in season. Underneath the whole hill is hollow, and the cave tours go down into it from the Castle District in about an hour.
Parliament inside, or the Basilica terrace
Parliament runs on capped timed slots in your own language and closes to visitors when the House sits. St Stephen’s is cheaper, opens earlier and puts you on a balcony at dome height.
The Great Synagogue and the streets around it
The largest synagogue in Europe, the memorial garden behind it and the blocks that were the ghetto. The same lanes fill with ruin bars after dark, which is a strange thing to walk twice in one day.
The Danube bends north of Budapest, and everything worth a day is on it.
Szentendre’s painted lanes, the citadel at Visegrád, the basilica dome at Esztergom you can see from Slovakia. Further off: Eger’s cellars, the Tokaj hills and Balaton. All of it leaves Budapest in the morning and is back for dinner.

Bring flip-flops and a towel or hire both at the desk, and treat the massage counter as optional.

The Ruin Bars
In 2002 somebody opened a bar in a derelict courtyard on Kazinczy utca rather than let it fall down, furnished it out of skips and hung a Trabant from the ceiling. Twenty years on the model has spread across the old Jewish Quarter. The good ones are still courtyards with the render falling off; the crawls exist because the doors that matter are unmarked.

The Danube by Night
The stretch between Margaret Bridge and the Chain Bridge is a UNESCO site, and it is lit for it. Boats leave every evening with a kitchen below and a folk band or a gypsy violinist on deck, and the Parliament comes up on the port side about twenty minutes in. It is unashamedly a tourist evening and it is still the best table in the city.
